PETERBOROUGH built up a healthy 14-point lead in the first leg of their KO Cup quarter-final with a 52-38 home win over Lakeside.
The Panthers produced a solid team effort to see off a Hammers side who relied firmly on their heat-leaders, who scored all but six of the visitors’ points.
Bradley Wilson-Dean led the way for the Panthers with 12+1 from five rides and Emil Grondal added 9+1, whilst Adam Ellis racked up 14 for Lakeside – who won seven of the first eleven races but conceded 5-1s in the other four.
Peterborough boss Carl Johnson said: “It’s only half of the job done, we’ve got to go there and finish it, but it was an excellent performance tonight.
“We were solid all the way through and I was really pleased with the way everyone rode, with only three last places all night. We always say don’t run last places and you’ll be there or thereabouts, and then you’ll rack up the heat advantages in the races you do win.
“Obviously we would have liked a couple more points of a lead, but they probably would have liked ten less! We certainly can’t get complacent as there’s a job to finish off.”
Hammers manager Will Pottinger said: “We had nine heat winners but twelve last places, so unfortunately there was no back-up for the heat-leaders who were winning races.
“It’s not un-doable by any means, but we do have a bit of a mountain to climb in the second leg whenever that may be.
“But if we learn lessons from it and put them into practice over the next two weekends, then it will still have been a worthwhile exercise.”
